Established in 2024, The Sydney Comics Art Market Place, or SCAMP, is proud to be Sydney’s first 100% comics-focused festival. It’s a space to celebrate comics in all their wonderful forms. It’s a unique opportunity for fans and artists to meet other like-minded creators while learning more about how their favourite comic books are made

 

SCAMP is an energetic and enthusiastic space for comic creators of all levels and genres. From superheroes to independently published comics, kids comics, genre works and autobio stories, SCAMP proudly encompasses it all.

Printing and Small Press Panel

10am - 10:45am @ Leichhardt Town Hall, 107 Norton Street, Leichhardt.

Join a team of Sydney’s self-published veterans as they talk you through what it takes to get your comics off the screen and onto the page. With decades of experience in small press and indie publishing between them, this absolutely stacked panel consists of Chris Neill (Publisher at Blueprint Comics), Sam Cheng (Publisher at Kindling Press), Safdar Ahmed (‘Still Alive’, ‘Space Jihad’) and Fionn Mcabe (Read to Me, Folio).

Comic Dream Journal Workshop

The ethereal, vivid imagery of dreams makes them a perfect source of inspiration for creating journal comics. Facilitated by acclaimed cartoonist Racheal Ang, this workshop guides artists as they turn the ghostly world of dreams into physical, tangible art.

Comedy in Comics Panel (+18)

In this strictly adults-only panel, you’ll learn the secrets of crafting gag comics that make you want to laugh out loud. Don’t miss this chance to hear Trudy Cooper (‘Oglaf’), Doug Bayne (‘Oglaf’), Stacy Gougoulis (ABC, Washington Post, Vice) and Scott Wrigg (Wrigg Works) in conversation as they talk all things comedy, making sexy comics, and the changing landscape of funny books.

Creating Captivating Comic Characters Workshop

Meet the next hit comic book character… you! Join South Australian graphic novelist and author Georgina Chadderton for a hands-on character drawing workshop. Learn how to design a cartoon version of yourself using shape language and illustrate your feelings through the magic of comics!

Drawing Ninja Turtles! Workshop

2pm - 2:45pm @ Leichhardt Town Hall, 107 Norton Street, Leichhardt.

Whether your fave is Leo, Donny, Mikey or Raph, this workshop will teach you how to draw the iconic heroes in a half shell. Join artist Louie Joyce as he shows young artists what it takes to imbue their drawings with turtle power!

Make your own Comic Zines!

3pm - 3:45pm @ Leichhardt Town Hall, 107 Norton Street, Leichhardt.

Whether you want to make comics for fun, profit, or as an outlet for all your silly jokes, this no-adults-allowed workshop has you covered. It doesn’t matter if you’re new to comics or already love them; this workshop will show you how to turn a blank page into endless, captivating comics.

 

This workshop is led by cartoonist and lifelong rabble-rouser, Samuel McEwen.

It’s MARKET DAY! Over 70 incredible artists from across the country will be selling their comics and graphic novels. Inside this humble hall, you’ll encounter some of the best established and emerging comic creators Sydney and Australia have to offer. Whether you are after graphic novels, indie comics, superhero comics, mini-comics, or anything in between, we’re confident you’ll find it inside.

Safdar Ahmed (he/him)

Safdar Ahmed is a comic artist, writer, and cultural worker based on the traditional lands of the Gadigal and Guringai people in Sydney, Australia. In 2011, he published ‘Still Alive’, a graphic novel about Australia’s refugee detention system, which won the Multicultural Award and Book of the Year in the 2022 NSW Premier’s Literary Awards, as well as the Eve Pownall Award for the Children’s Book Council of Australia and was shortlisted for the Prime Minister’s Literary Awards in the YA category. Safdar is a founding member of the community art organisation, Refugee Art Project, and a member of eleven, a collective of contemporary Muslim Australian artists, curators and writers. His latest comic, ‘Space Jihad’, is currently being serialised across 6 issues by the wonderful Glom Press.

 

Rachel Ang (she/they)

Rachel Ang is an artist and writer who makes comics. Their work has been published in international journals such as The New Yorker and kuš!, and Australian periodicals like The Age and Meanjin. Their new book, a collection of short stories in comics form titled ‘I Ate The Whole World to Find You’, is out now through Drawn and Quarterly and Scribe, and was shortlisted for an Ignatz Award.

 

Doug Bayne (he/him) & Trudy Cooper (any)

Doug has worked for years in video graphics and live comedy. Trudy has spent years feeding cats and being a comic artist and character designer. Together, they make the internationally beloved and extremely adult webcomic ‘Oglaf’, a webcomic that is now old enough to get its driver’s licence

 

Georgina Chadderton (she/they)

Georgina Chadderton is an awkward yet friendly Australian cartoonist with an undying love of eating snacks, drinking green tea, patting dogs and playing roller derby. Georgina's debut graphic novel, ‘Oh Brother’ (Penguin Random House, 2026), is a middle-grade memoir about growing up with a sibling with complex support needs (and also being an awkward, sweaty teen). When they're not making comics, Georgina co-directs Papercuts Comics Festival, runs comics-making workshops and reads comics by their favourite comics makers (basically, it’s all comics, all the time). Georgina lives on Kaurna Yerta (Adelaide) in South Australia with her partner Owen and their distressingly large collection of books. Find out more at www.georgerexcomics.com

 

Andrew Constant (he/him)

Beginning his comic book career in 2011, Andrew has produced a wide array of comics, including award-winning and award-nominated work.

 

Andrew has produced a large body of work for DC Comics, having written stories for characters such as THE TITANS, BEAST BOY, NIGHTWING, ETRIGAN, SWAMP THING and WONDER WOMAN.

 

Andrew has also written extensively for Australia’s two largest comic book publishers: Frew Publications (for characters such as THE PHANTOM) and Gestalt Comics (creator-owned graphic novels ‘Torn’, ‘Broken Line’, and the award-winning ‘Fly’, to name a few). Andrew likes to think he’s funny, but deep down knows otherwise.

 

Stacy Gougoulis (he/they)

Stacy is an illustrator, radio presenter, and Eisner Award–nominated cartoonist whose work has appeared in publications like The Washington Post, Fantagraphics NOW and VICE. They are currently working on their debut graphic novel, ‘Bivouac’, which will be published by Fantagraphics.

 

Louie Joyce (he/him)

Louie Joyce is an award-winning comics creator, illustrator, and educator based on Dharawal Country, Wollongong. Louie is currently drawing the ‘Tales of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ comic series, which brings the latest incarnation of the iconic Turtles franchise (Mutant Mayhem, Tales of the TMNT) to the comic page! 

 

He's also the Writer/Artist of ‘Godzilla: Skate or Die!’ A story about 4 young skater punks getting caught up in an epic Kaiju clash that brings Godzilla back to Australian shores. Other comics include ‘A Fistful of Pain’, ‘Haphaven’ & ‘Past the Last Mountain’. When he's not drawing, Louie is usually at the skate park with his kids rolling around on the greatest of all human inventions: Rollerblades!!!

 

Nicola Scott (she/her)

Nicola Scott is an Australian comic book artist working primarily in the

American mainstream industry since 2002. She became a fan favourite at DC Comics, drawing iconic characters such as Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman and team titles including the New York Times Bestseller ‘Earth 2’.

 

Other notable works include her creator-owned Image Comics maxi-series ‘Black Magick’ and DC’s ‘Wonder Woman: Year One’, both in collaboration with writer Greg Rucka. Also, multiple Eisner Award-winning ‘Wonder Woman: Historia’ with Kelly Sue DeConnick, Phil Jimenez and Gene Ha. ‘Black Magick’ has won multiple awards, including an Aurealis and a few Ledgers (Comic Arts Awards of Australia).

 

She’s worked with the United Nations, Vogue Australia, The New York Times, The Guardian, and gave a keynote at the 2018 Adobe Max Creative Conference. She lives in the Blue Mountains with her husband and their cat.
